NUOVA JOLLY Prince 50 – 4 x 400hp V10 Mercs

By Thomas P.

Luxurious, aggressive and with great performance, Prince 50 upgrades and promotes the on-board livability to the highest level.
The people of Nuova Jolly are never idle and make sure, almost every year, to present something new and innovative, conquering with their value a place among the most important and strongest global Brands, driving the competition to very high levels. So once again, they managed to become a pole of attraction, magnetizing all visitors of the 63rd Genoa Boat Show with the charm of their flagship’s personality, which is one of the largest maxi Ribs on the market.

With a complete portfolio of highly successful open, semi-cabin and cabin models from 5 to 15 meters, Nuova Jolly constantly striving for perfection has shown us exceptional boats that stand out both for their high construction quality and for comfort, safety and of course their seaworthiness even in bad weather conditions.
New Prince 50 is a typical example of the wonderful work done at the Milanese shipyard and her mission is to travel to distant destinations safely, while ensuring luxurious and comfortable living for her passengers, providing particularly large spaces both on deck and below.
Certainly, its purchase is a "midsummer night's dream'' for most, but on the other hand dreams don't cost anything and everyone has the right to dream and travel on blue routes with his imagination.

On deck

The walkaround deck allows the unobstructed on-board movement along its entire length, allowing passengers to quickly and safely reach any part of it, while its uneven levels define three separate and independent gathering areas that can accommodate many people, without giving the feeling of crowding.

One of the strongest points of the deck is undoubtedly the huge central lounge which is the main gathering area of the boat and can be converted into a large dining area consisting of a beautifully designed table and three individual sofas, able to comfortably accommodate from 6 to 9 people. A few minutes of observation are enough to reveal to you the high quality of equipment, the excellent finish as well as the particularly intelligent and functional interventions that ensure ergonomics and comfort in living on board.
Directly behind the lounge area, the centrally located large stern sundeck stands out, having to its port and starboard wide passageways that ensure our particularly comfortable movement to the central cockpit or the engine area. With simple design lines, it is attractive at first glance while the high quality of its upholstery and its high degree of resistance to exposure to the harsh conditions of sun and salt are obvious.

Under the sundeck, which is raised by an electric mechanism reaching 70 degrees of inclination for our most comfortable access, there is the largest storage space of the boat which is really huge and of course it could well be converted into a large and comfortable guest cabin.
In the adjacent photo we can see how nicely arranged the boat's equipment is, which gives us the possibility of immediate inspection but also great working conditions when it is required.

In front of the lounge the extremely large outdoor kitchen lays that has all the necessary equipment to cook on board, while in the center there is a large refrigerator with drawers. At the ends of the galley there are oval stainless handles which are very useful not only when moving around on deck but also when standing up during the trip.
On the front surface of the superstructure of the outdoor kitchen the three individual helm seats are fitted, which have flip-up bolsters allowing us to drive in any position we wish.

The pilot station is very well protected both by the glass windshield surrounded by a single oval stainless rail and by the T-top that protects us from the sun and rain. Of course, we would prefer the absence of the double column that supports the hard top and descends in front of the windshield because it significantly limits visibility while driving.
The instrument panel is made of carbon fiber and has two large multifunctional screens, while its inclination is ideal so that we can directly distinguish their indications in any driving position.

To the left of the helm is the sliding door that leads to the cabin of Prince 50, which despite its seemingly small size that matches harmoniously with the sporty character of the Rib, hides huge interior spaces that we will especially appreciate during our stay. It is centrally located, leaving wide passageways to its port and starboard facilitating our movements, while in the front part it has a large built-in double seat which is reclining and consists the second entrance door to the cabin, ensuring both its ventilation and direct access in our respective space of desire.

The interior of the cabin is of course the strongest point of the Rib and shows the ability of the designers to exploit and highlight every corner in the best way, always with ergonomics and functionality in mind.
Descending the three steps from the main entrance of the cabin which is next to the pilot station, we find ourselves in the central headroom which is long and can comfortably stand even tall people. To our left there is a large kitchen fully equipped with oven, sink and refrigerator, while it has a very large counter on which can prepare anything we desire. The wooden door is directly opposite that leads to the individual bathroom area, which is very nicely designed and has a high level of equipment and an excellent finish of its furniture.
The large window in the roof of the cabin ensures abundant natural lighting, while at the front of it there is the large bed with the wonderful side and long narrow windows ensuring a magical view towards the surface of the sea. Behind the main entrance of the cabin and below the steering seats, we can find the second cabin of the boat which can comfortably accommodate almost even up to 4 children of a family.

In the bow area the second lounge area of the boat lays which can be quickly converted into a small dining one or a large sun pad, depending on the position we wish to place the central wooden table that operates with an electro-hydraulic mechanism. Further forward is the large hatch that gives easy access to the anchor windlass, while its clean and clear exterior surface can be used as a diving platform.

At sea

With the max horsepower for the Prince 50 transom rating at 1800hp, our test Rib was powered with quad V10 400hp Mercury four stroke outboards, which have a 2.08:1 gear ratio and were propped with the new 18΄΄ x 21΄΄ 4-blade Revolution X propellers. This particular set-up proved to be extremely efficient across the whole rpm range and easily gave us a top speed of 51 knots.

With 800 liters of fuel, a crew of 4 and all the basic equipment on board, Prince 50 was standing on plane at just 2000 rpm maintaining an extremely low speed of 11.5 knots. These numbers, which are due both to the correct weight distribution of the boat and to the design features of the new Revolution X propellers, are really great and of course much more important even than the top speed of the boat. It is certain that they will be especially appreciated when we encounter very bad weather conditions and are forced to travel at low speeds.

At 3000 rpm, we were cruising at 20 knots burning 5 liters per nautical mile, while at 3500 rpm our speed was 25 knots with a fuel consumption of 5.4 liters per mile.
At these speeds, of course, Prince 50 felt like anchored, so we quickly pushed the throttles forward. At 4000 rpm, we were running with 30 knots and at 4500 at 35 with a consumption of 5.7 and 6 liters per mile respectively. In this range of speeds the hull finds its ideal ride angle in relation to the surface of the sea, the navigation becomes really enjoyable and we can comfortably approach very distant destinations with great comfort.

You can see the detailed measurements in the table below:

At 5000 rpm we got another 4 knots reaching 39, with consumption rising by 0.7 liters per mile, while at 5500 rpm we were cruising at 43 knots consuming 8 liters per nautical mile. It was obvious that Prince 50 is also capable of travelling us along comfortably at these cruising speeds, which seem much slower than they really are.
At 6000 rpm we were running at 47 knots burning 8.9 liters per mile, while at WOT the engines reached their maximum rp limit and the boat reached a top speed of 51 knots with a fuel consumption of 9.3 liters per nautical mile.
It is characteristic that even at high speeds, which we reached without much effort, the hull behaved with great stability, showing us that it can comfortably handle much higher speeds.

The 22 degrees of the transom of Prince 50 combined with its long hull length that easily bridged the waves gave us a particularly smooth riding, while the handling of the Rib was completely friendly providing a great feeling of confidence and safety even when attempting sharp maneuvers. Despite her large size, the boat was extremely maneuverable and responded immediately to changes in direction without any lag.
Accelerations and grips were excellent compared to her 15 meters length and 11 tons of weight, even at low rpm, a very important fact that allows us to drive with confidence in bad weather conditions.

The feeling we got as well as the numbers we recorded showed that we had in our hands a completely correctly set up boat which does not need any improvement or interventions. The engines were revving to their maximum limit while the slip values were really impressive even at low rpm, where we were getting almost the maximum cruising speed with the best possible fuel economy thus being able to achieve maximum range even when cruising with bad weather.
And of course, the 3.9% slip we recorded at WOT is an undeniable witness to the very good set-up which is even more valuable if we consider the length and weight of Prince 50.
