Stingher 22 GT - 200hp V6 Mercury

By Thomas P.

Practical and with comfortable deck spaces that make it ideal for family holidays, Stingher 22 GT is the evolution of our well-known 686XS adapted to the general layout of the GT series.
With a length of 6.80m and a total width of 2.84m, it provides us a comfortable and quality living at sea, traveling particularly pleasantly in the range of 23 to 30 knots and capable of transporting us safely to distant destinations.

The bow sundeck is 1.44m long, 0.60m wide in the headrest area, while the width in the foot area reaches 1.40m. The central part of the cushions is removable to ensure comfortable access to the bow, while below there is a large single compartment that can accommodate all the necessary equipment of the boat and many of our luggage.

The hard nose is large enough to ensure comfortable access to the boat, while the cleats are correctly placed on its side surfaces without posing any risk of injury during our movement. Under the large hatch in her roof, there is a large locker where the windlass and the chain of the anchor are accommodated, which is very well protected in the deep channel formed in the forward part of the hard nose.

The console, redesigned with modern lines, is centrally located, leaving comfortable passageways to the right and left of it, with a maximum width of 35 cm, for our unhindered back and forth movement.
The instrument panel is large enough to accommodate even large navigation devices as well as the entire electronic equipment of the boat.

The steering wheel is on the left, the engine control in the center, while at the base of the console is the built-in footrest that we will especially appreciate when driving seated.
In the front part of the console there is a large door with an integrated seat, which when tilted reveals the individual toilet area.

Whether we are driving in a semi-upright position or sitting on the double reclining helm seat, which is 83cm wide, the view to the bow and the horizon is very good, while the windscreen and the console which is wider in its upper part offer very good protection to both the driver as well as the co-pilot from wind and spray.

Behind the helm seat is the outside galley with sink, gas hob and 20 liter built-in drawer fridge.
The width of the deck in the stern area reaches 1.50m, while the stern sofa is 1.60m wide and hides a large storage space underneath.

The area around the engine is clean and gives us quite good freedom of movement, with the swimming platforms increasing even more the total free surface which is particularly useful for our marine activities.

At sea

A V6 200hp Mercury engine was mounted on the transom of Stingher 22 GT, which with a 1.85:1 gear ratio was turning a 4-blade 14 5/8΄΄x 17΄΄ Revolution propeller. We were a crew of 3 with all the equipment on board and 200 liters of fuel, while the weather conditions were very good. From the first moment it seemed that we had a very good set-up in our hands, in which we would not make any intervention in terms of the propeller or the engine mounting height.

In any case the boat was riding very well and safely, maintaining an excellent angle, giving us a smooth ride whilst keeping the spray off the deck. Its sturdy construction was evident as even when we pushed it to its limits no annoying noise reached our ears.
It is characteristic that we could travel even at 3500 rpm, enjoying the sea and the air, having the engines operating effortlessly. It is especially important to be able to maintain low cruising speeds which allows us to approach distant destinations with great comfort. In these rpm, the boat cruised at 23 knots, very pleasantly and lightly, recording the most economical fuel consumption, giving us a range of 206 nautical miles on the 200 liters of fuel we had in our tank.

Stingher 22 GT showed us explosive accelerations throughout the whole rpm range, standing on plane at 2500 rpm maintaining a speed of 11 knots, planning in 3 seconds with minimal and instant bow rising, accelerating to 30 knots in 7 seconds and reaching 40 knots in 13 seconds.

At 3000 and 3500 rpm, we were cruising at 17 and 23 knots respectively burning 0.97 liters per nautical mile, while at 4000 rpm our speed was 27 knots with the fuel consumption rising only slightly to 1.07 liters per mile, having an enjoying and relaxing riding.

At 4500 rpm, we were running at 31 knots burning 1.16 liters per mile, while at 5000 rpm our speed was 36 knots with a consumption of 1.19 liters per mile.

At wide open throttle we reached 42 knots with the engine reaching 5800 rpm, which is the maximum rpm recommended by the manufacturer.

You can see the detailed measurements in the table below:

Taking a close look at the slip values in the table above we will see the excellent values that the Revolution propeller gives us, remaining very low after 3500 rpm to reach an excellent 4% at 5800 rpm. This means that we get almost the maximum performance of the propeller at medium rpm, which increases throttle response, reduces fuel consumption and maximizes our range.

Of course, if we want to increase our top speed by 1 to 2 knots and reduce the fuel consumption even more, we can go to a Tempest or Enertia 3-blade propeller with a longer pitch. In this case, however, we will lose the wonderful "bite" in the water that the Revolution offers, something very important that we will especially appreciate when traveling in bad weather conditions, while we will have a significant lag and increased slip when carrying heavy loads.
