New CAPELLI Tempest 42 – Twin 450hp XTO Yamahas

By Thomas P.

Totally renewed and with a completely different layout, the all-new Tempest 42 that made its debut at the 63rd Genoa Boat Show came to replace the Tempest 40.
More functional and ergonomic, with clearly larger spaces than its predecessor but also with a more aggressive and sporty character, Tempest 42 maintains to the highest degree what we call ΄΄family feeling΄΄ and comfortable living on-board.

Starting from the bow area, we notice a completely different design of the polyester nose which has been greatly widened, offering a large step for our entry and exit from the boat when tying up with the bow at the dock.

A large hatch gives easy access to the locker that houses the windlass and the anchor’s chain, while it is also a great seat to enjoy the sea when conditions permit.
The seat located in the front part of the cabin has also been enlarged and is now recessed, providing in addition comfort and great safety.

In the area of the stern we also notice obvious changes, first and foremost the absence of the roll bar which gives a clearly more aggressive character to the boat.
The sundeck and the lounge, which with the help of the electric table can easily be converted into a large dinette, have been considerably enlarged while the ends of the gunwales surrounding them have been raised higher offering a safety feeling when moving towards the engine area.

The sundeck of the stern opens now from its rear side with an electro-hydraulic mechanism, while it has a very useful compartment for placing fenders and ropes which will be especially appreciated during the process of mooring the boat.
Below the sundeck there is the largest storage area of Tempest 42, where everything is very well arranged, indicating the attention paid by the yard to every detail.

The cabin has been enlarged in all its dimensions offering more comfortable living, as well as the windshield that protects much better against wind and spray, while ensuring excellent visibility towards the bow. The addition of the T-top has also completely changed the character of the Rib, and in addition to the much-desired shade it offers, it has the corresponding surface for the installation of two solar panels of 100w each, which are capable of meeting the needs of our electrical appliances.

At Sea

On the transom of Tempest 42, two new XTO 450hp Yamaha engines were hung which with a gear ratio of 1.79:1 were turning the 16 3/8΄΄ x 20΄΄ 3-blade stainless XTO propellers.
The upgraded Yamaha engines, having noticeably lower noise levels throughout their whole rpm range, gave us enjoyable moments while once again we witnessed their enormous torque which, in combination with the large-diameter propellers, can effortlessly move large and heavy vessels.

With 23 degrees of deadrise at the transom and her new vertical bow, Tempest 42 was standing on plane at 2000 rpm with 12 knots and accelerated to 30 knots in 6 seconds, reaching 40 knots in 11 seconds.
Accelerations were very good throughout the whole rpm range, while the greater maneuverability of the boat was characteristic, particularly in the turns we attempted, due to the higher placement of the air chambers compared to that of Tempest 40.

The most economical cruising speed was recorded at 3000 rpm where the Yamaha multi-instrument showed 21 knots with a fuel consumption of 3 liters per nautical mile.

At 3500 and 4000 rpm, our speed was 26 and 31 knots, while burning 3.3 and 3.6 liters per nautical mile respectively.

You can see the detailed measurements in the table below:

After 4000 rpm, where the engines produce their maximum torque (546 N-m), I pushed down the throttle levers and the Rib rocketed forward with great acceleration. At 4500 rpm, we were cruising at 36 knots burning 4.5 liters per mile, while at 5000 rpm we were running with 40 knots consuming 4.7 liters per mile. The hull of the 13m inflatable boat was standing high above the water, which is mainly due to the large propellers which generate excellent stern lift, reducing the wet surfaces and thus improving both the handling of the boat and the performance in terms of speed, slip values and fuel consumption.
At full throttle, the engines reached almost their maximum rpm limit and Tempest 42 reached a top speed of 49 knots.

Driving the 13 meter Tempest 42 with the two new V8 450hp XTO outboards, it was clear that I had a very good set-up in my hands with immediate throttle response and great maneuverability for the size of the boat, which is also evident from the slip rates we recorded.
There is no doubt that this particular boat-engines combination provides great comfort of living even for multi days on-board, while it can travel us very safely to distant destinations, maintaining fast cruising speeds even in bad weather conditions.
