ΖΕΝ 39S - Twin 5.7L V10 350hp Verados

By Thomas P.

Having tested ZEN with every possible engine combination, reviews of which can be found on our website, this time we found ourselves behind the steering wheel with two Mercury V10 350hp Verado engines on the transom, which with a gear ratio of 2.08:1 were turning the large diameter, 25-inch-pitch Revolution X propellers.

The weather conditions were very good and so with quite loose mood, we recorded the behavior of the boat with the new engine combination while at the same time enjoying with all our senses our ride around Makronissos Island.

We had 450 liters of fuel and we were a crew of 4 with all the equipment of the boat, the hull of which was painted.

ZEN 39S was standing on plane at 2300 rpm maintaining a speed of 13 knots and showed us very good handling behavior throughout the whole rpm range. It is worth noting that compared to the cabin one that wore the V10 400hp engines and the same pitch propellers, ZEN 39S achieved higher cruising speeds in the midrange with approximately the same fuel consumption.

Throttle response was very good throughout the whole rpm range while the boat cruises delightfully at 40 knots, allowing us to cover long distances quickly and comfortably even in not the most favorable weather conditions.

At 3000 rpm we were running at 23 knots burning 2.5 liters per nautical mile, recording the most economical cruising speed.
At 3500 rpm, our speed was 28 knots with a fuel consumption of 2.6 liters per mile, while at 4000 rpm we were cruising along at 36 knots burning 2.65 liters per mile.
At 4500 rpm, our speed was 41 knots with a consumption of 3.1 liters per mile, while at 5000 rpm we were running at 46 knots burning 3.3 liters per mile.
At full throttle, we recorded a top speed of 55.5 knots, but the engines were far from their maximum rev limit, reaching just 5800 rpm.

You can see the detailed measurements in the table below:

It is worth noting that before the hull fouling, as its owner told us, ZEN 39S reached a top speed of 57 knots.
It took us quite some time trying to get the Rib on plane with just the starboard engine, and ZEN 39S was cruising with 28 knots at 4500 rpm, while at full throttle reaching a top speed of 36 knots at 5000 rpm.

Studying our measurements, we note the very good slip values we recorded with these particular propellers, which however did not allow the engines to reach their maximum rpm limit.
It is therefore necessary to go to much shorter propellers to reduce the load on the engines and therefore be able to reach 6400 rpm at full throttle. In this case, the throttle response and boat handling throughout the whole rpm range will be greatly improved, while we will have a clear advantage when travelling in bad weather conditions.
