MAR.CO R-Evolution 26 – Mercury Racing 450R

By Thomas P.

The new R-Evolution 26, which was presented for the first time at the 62nd Genoa Boat Show, has a rather ambitious but also a specific goal: to incorporate in her only 8 meters of length, the quality, style and comfort of the bigger sisters of the R -Evolution series.
The absence of the roll bar, which is found in all the yards models under 9 meters, gives a sportier character to the Rib that we definitely liked the most.

With an overall length of 8.02 meters and a width of 3.06 meters, with a particularly comfortable and functional deck running on a very seaworthy hull, R-Evolution 26 was created to claim that market share which consists of demanding and experienced users. By combining the excellent construction quality and the high level of finish, elements that characterize all the models of the MAR.CO shipyard, it is certain that she cannot but deservedly occupy one of the highest positions in her category.

In the area of the bow, its particularly wide and very nicely designed hard nose stands out, which hugs the front part of the air chambers and ensures comfortable access to the boat. The anchor nestles in the stainless steel construction of the bow entrance, thus leaving the surface of the hard nose perfectly clean, without posing any risk of injury.
Below the sundeck, which can comfortably accommodate two people, there are 3 separate lockers, the starboard of which is long and narrow for storing long items.

The pilot station is elegantly designed and can accommodate large navigation screens, while the windshield is very high to completely protect the captain-copilot from wind and spray.
The engine control is centrally located, with the steering wheel to the port and two cup holders to the starboard, below which is the very nice little panel that houses the high quality electrical switches.
Beneath the double helm seat is the boat's outdoor galley, which is fully equipped and elegantly designed to leave wide passageways to its right and left for the unhindered movement of passengers back and forth.
The polyester T-top is definitely one of the strongest elements of R-Evolution 26, standing out for its aesthetics and functionality while also matching harmoniously with the overall design lines of the Rib.

The console, without being large, hides the comfortable and individual bathroom space inside, which is fully equipped and can accommodate even tall people.
Directly behind the outdoor galley is the aft lounge, which can be converted into a large sunbed or a comfortable dinette, while to the port side is the clever portable little door that leads to the engine area.
On the backrest of the stern sofa, if we lift the hatch located centrally and made of plexiglass, we will find the shower socket and the filling caps of the boat's tanks, while on the right we see the wonderful place for the fenders which not only do not limit any interior space but are also very easily accessible.
To the port and starboard of the engine there are two large swimming platforms which hide pleasant surprises, while at the same time offering plenty of free surface both for boarding or disembarking from the boat and for our marine activities.

At sea

Our test Rib was equipped with Mercury's V8 450R supercharged engine, which has by far the best power-to-weight ratio in its class, produces 40% more torque than its 400R counterpart, has a maximum rpm limit of 6400 and runs with 1.60:1 gear ratio. With 200 liters of fuel, 3 people crew and a 26'' Revolution propeller that was installing in the lower unit we went out onto the waters of Genoa for a short evaluation.

R-Evolution 26 jumped on plane almost instantly, standing there at 2300 rpm with 12 knots consuming 25 liters per hour, while accelerating to 30 knots in 7 seconds and reaching 40 knots in 12 seconds.
The handling of the Rib was very good, as was the response to the throttle and her stability was impressive even when we were running at full throttle, where she traveled like it was on train rails without even having to hold the steering wheel.

At 3000 rpm we recorded the most economical cruising speed, travelling at 20 knots with a fuel consumption of 1.75 liters per nautical mile.
At 3500 rpm we were cruising at 25 knots burning 1.88 liters per mile, while at 4000 rpm we were running at 30 knots consuming 2 liters per mile.
At 4500 rpm our speed reached 34.5 knots with a consumption of 2.1 liters per mile, while at 5000 rpm we were running at 37 knots burning 2.4 liters per nautical mile.
At full throttle, the engine reached 5950 rpm and R-Evolution 26 reached a top speed of 48.5 knots.

You can see the detailed measurements in the table below:

The engine, of course, was not capable of reaching its maximum rpm limit, which necessitated the use of a shorter propeller pitch, at least by 2 inches.

A closer look at the measurement table reveals the extremely high slip values recorded throughout the whole engine rpm range. This in itself means that the losses are huge and of course we are led to the conclusion that in this particular set-up we have to install larger diameter propellers, which should be tested at different engine mounting heights.
