So after 4 years of continuous operation, including the most exhaustive test ever submitted to trim tabs in history – referring of course to the ΄΄Ribbing for Arctic΄΄ mission where we operated the Hydrotab trim tabs permanently for approximately 6,000 nautical miles in the harshest seas of world - we decided to check them out to find out their status.
As you can clearly see in the photos above, apart from some rust and a little marine growth that built up on them, the trim tabs were in excellent condition and look like they would be capable to function perfectly, without any maintenance at all, for many years to come. You can also see how simple and ingenious their operating mechanism is, as well as the excellent condition of their springs and synthetic materials.
A simple wash with detergent and water restored the trim tabs to their original condition, leaving us absolutely confident of their trouble-free operation for many years to come.
So it becomes clear that only if our boat remains docked for many months, it is advisable to remove the front plate of the trim tabs and clean them internally every year, while if we are used to having it on a trailer launching it constantly then we don't even need to go into this process, although it won't take us more than a few minutes.
